Growing literacy and weariness with religious quarrels set a context for wide popular interest in the new science. A strong turn toward reason and its ability to solve problems lead enlightenment thinkers such as Voltaire, Locke, Benjamin Franklin, and Mary Wallstonecraft to challenge previously held beliefs and the ways government, constitutions, and equality impacted citizens of their various countries.
